Malivoire Winery, 2009

Niagara on the Lake, Ontario; Commercial

Spirit of place (or soul) refers to the unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of a place; often those celebrated by artists and writers, but also those cherished in folk tales, festivals and celebrations. The Roman term for spirit of place was Genius loci, by which it is sometimes still referred. The winery’s meticulous form respects this.

The building is composed of the three primary shapes: a rectangle, circle, and triangle. The Rectangle flows along the landscape, extruded to efficiently house the wine processing: preparation, fermentation, and packaging. The triangle holds the administration, which enables the winery staff to look onto the three access of the site. Finally, the public retail and tourism center of the winery is housed within a cylindrical form, encouraging visitors to enjoy the spectacular panorama of the vineyard. At the intersection of the winery is an open courtyard that embraces the nature elements: the sun, the wind, and the view.

The positioning of these building masses is optimized for today's operation and the future expendabilities of Malivoire Winery.
