The O, 2006
Vancouver; Religious (Sacred Space)
The O is a sacred space designed to accommodate various religions under one roof. The built form is inspired by the water lily, a plant widely considered a sacred symbol. The Stem of the O is a quiet prayers chapel anchored 30 feet into the sea. The lily pad is the grandiose heart of the building; it is an open space with operable partitions designed to accommodate various groups and its activities. At the center, a large 8-piece operable roof encourages daylight and views into the Pacific sky. Located off the coast of Vancouver, Canada, the O can be access via boat. Upon arrival, boats are parked in a secondary storage structure. This sacred santuary is a peaceful forum for religious and philosophical exchange.
