Urban Study: St. James Town, 2010

Toronto, Canada; Urban Design

Toronto's St. James Town is one of the densest neighbourdhoods in North America, and it's in need of revitalization. Since its conception, the lack of class diversity, community ammenities, and maintenance protocols have caused its built environment deteriorate and fallen out of public favour. The goal of the revitalization is to enhance its unique dense character while improving living qualities within and beyond the residential unit. The vision is to (re)make St. James Town the place to live in the city.

The majority of the residents are transient, and therefore finds it difficult to call St. James Town home. New additional amenities should hope to change the affable nature of the residences. Then perhaps counter-intuitively, the design proposes to add 17,000 new ownership occupants to balance economic status of the community. This new masterplan extensively outlines the new, the old, and the renewal components within the next 30 years.
